Grafana Cloud hosts an official MCP server at https://mcp.grafana.com/mcp. With it, Andromity can look up dashboards, query metrics, logs and traces, and read alerts and incidents while it debugs a service in your repository.

Sign-in is OAuth 2.1 in your browser, and access is scoped to your own Grafana permissions. This server is for Grafana Cloud stacks only.

What the agent can do with Grafana

  • Search and navigate dashboards and folders.
  • List data sources and query Prometheus, Loki, Tempo, Pyroscope, ClickHouse, CloudWatch and Elasticsearch.
  • Read alerting rules, annotations, incidents and OnCall information.
  • Create or modify dashboards, alerts and incidents when write access is granted.
  • Ask Grafana Assistant questions and start Assistant investigations (ask_assistant).
  • Render a dashboard panel as an image (get_panel_image) and describe infrastructure (describe_infrastructure).

Example prompts

Ask for the work in plain language. Naming the server helps, for example “use the Grafana MCP server”.

  • Find the Grafana dashboard for the orders API, check the p99 latency panel over the last day and tell me which handler in this repo it points to.
  • Query Loki for errors from the payments service in the last hour and trace them to the code that logs them.
  • List firing alerts for the checkout service and tell me whether this diff touches the code behind them.
  • Check recent incidents for the auth service and summarize what changed each time.

Connect Grafana

  1. Confirm Grafana Assistant is available for your Grafana Cloud stack and that you have the Assistant Cloud MCP User role or the grafana-assistant-app.cloud-mcp:access permission. Editor and higher roles have it by default.
  2. In VS Code, open Andromity Hub → MCP Servers → Discover. In the terminal app, open /settings → MCP → + Connect an app. Find Grafana and select Connect.
  3. Approve the connection in your browser. On the consent page, choose the access level: Read, Query or Write.
  4. Andromity saves Grafana to ~/.andromity/mcp.json and connects it.

See Connect an app for how Andromity stores connectors and tokens.

Access and safety

  • Access follows your Grafana RBAC permissions. The consent page offers three levels: Read, Query (adds raw SQL, which runs as written and can modify data) and Write (adds creating or modifying dashboards, alerts and incidents).
  • Read-only access means clearing both Write and Query on the consent page. Write is enabled by default for Org Admins; other users need the Assistant Admin role.
  • For several stacks, Grafana documents https://mcp.grafana.com/mcp/<your-stack>.grafana.net, one entry per stack. Add it by hand in mcp.json and sign in from its card.

In an untrusted folder, MCP servers don’t start at all. Read workspace trust and permission modes for the full model.

Limits to know

  • Grafana Cloud only. Self-hosted Grafana uses Grafana's open source MCP server, which Andromity's one-click connector does not cover.
  • The MCP server is part of Grafana Assistant and follows the same plan-level usage and limits. Each MCP user counts as an active user for billing.
  • Access tokens last one hour and refresh for up to 30 days, then you must sign in again.

Questions

Does Grafana have an official MCP server?
Yes. Grafana Cloud hosts one at https://mcp.grafana.com/mcp, and Grafana also publishes an open source server for self-hosted setups.
Does this work with self-hosted Grafana?
No. The hosted server is for Grafana Cloud. Self-hosted users should use Grafana's open source MCP server.
Can I make Grafana read-only for the agent?
Yes. On Grafana's consent page, clear both Write and Query to leave read access only.
