Start an AI Coding Task in VS Code or Terminal

Install Andromity, connect a model, trust your workspace, and review your first code change in VS Code or terminal.

This guide will walk you through installing Andromity, connecting your preferred AI provider, and completing your first autonomous pair-programming task.

Install Andromity

Choose your preferred runtime environment:

Install the official extension from the Visual Studio Marketplace:

code --install-extension agenticmarket.andromity-agent

Or search for Andromity AI Coding Agent inside the VS Code Extensions tab (Ctrl+Shift+X or Cmd+Shift+X).

Open Your Workspace & Trust the Folder

Open any repository in VS Code or navigate to your project directory in terminal:

cd my-project
andromity

Security First: Folders are untrusted by default. Repository tool reads, writes, and command execution are blocked until you grant workspace trust.

Type /trust in the chat bar to grant trust to the workspace:

/trust

Configure Your Model & API Key

Andromity starts on the free Andromity gateway, so you can try it without a key. For your own provider account, add a key (BYOK), or run models locally with Ollama. See API Keys and Providers for every option.

VS Code: open Settings → API Keys & Connectors (the gear at the top of the chat), paste the key into the provider's card and select Save.

Terminal app: save the key with /keys set and the provider ID:

/keys set anthropic sk-ant-api03-...
/keys set openai sk-proj-...
/keys set google AIza...
/keys set groq gsk_...

Then choose a model with /model in VS Code, or Ctrl+L in the terminal app.

Run Your First Autonomous Task

Ask Andromity to analyze, plan, or implement a feature in your codebase:

Refactor src/auth.py to use async/await and add comprehensive pytest unit tests

In SAFE mode (default):

  1. Andromity generates an interactive implementation blueprint.
  2. You review and click Approve Plan.
  3. The agent edits files and displays interactive green/red diffs for approval.
  4. It executes pytest in the terminal to verify the tests pass autonomously.

Helpful Shortcuts

In the terminal app (the same keys on macOS):

ShortcutAction
Ctrl+LSwitch model or provider
Ctrl+USwitch profile: builder, coder, reviewer, planner
Ctrl+OBrowse sessions
Ctrl+EOpen settings

In both VS Code and the terminal app:

CommandAction
/modelSwitch model
/undoRevert the last turn and the files it changed
/compactSummarize older turns to free context

In VS Code, open the live execution trace with the Waterfall button at the top of the chat. See Waterfall.
